We sat down with Pro Runner Sara Hall to chat all things Chicago Marathon. Get the scoop below.
Please note: this was conducted prior to the 2026 Chicago Marathon. The tone, tense, and brevity were adjusted to reflect this.
Choosing Your Race
Question: Why did you choose to run Chicago this year?
Sara: I was excited for an opportunity to run fast after doing some training last winter that indicated that might be possible. In the fall, the US majors are what excite me most.
Question: What was your goal going into Chicago?
Sara: My main goal was to be as present as possible and to let go of my ego and focus on the feeling of being out there. I hope to be able to enjoy the moment no matter what the external result. But I would also love a chance to lower my Master's American record.
Question: What were you most excited about for race day?
Sara: I was excited to be a part of a strong American contingent and I was also excited just to run fast at sea level after being at super high altitude all summer and fall.
Training Focus
Question: What has been the biggest focus of this training block?
Sara: Continuing to evolve how I train at 43 to find the balance of being aggressive but still absorbing the training well.
Question: What’s one thing you’ve learned during this marathon build?
Sara: I’m learning to give grace to myself and adjust my expectations when I don’t hit workout times quite the same as my best-ever and still enjoy the process.
Question: What advice would you give someone running Chicago for the first time?
Sara: The quiet miles are the hardest miles. Get past 21 and you’re home free.
Nutrition Strategy
Question: How has your fueling strategy changed throughout the build toward Chicago?
Sara: I am taking in much more carbs during and outside of training than I ever have. My stomach has always handled lots of carbs well, but I’ve really pushed that upper end.
Question: How are you using UCAN during training and how did you use it on race day?
Sara: I’ve used UCAN almost every day of this buildup. I used it as part of my breakfast, right before heading to the line, and at intervals throughout the race.
Question: What’s your go to pre race routine?
Sara: Carb loading 48 hours out. Rest and working on my mechanics.
