Over 10 years ago, I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. I was gaining weight and my HbA1c was rapidly increasing even though I was physically active and working with a Diabetes nutritionist. I was taking the maximum dose of MetFormin and my doctor wanted me to add Insulin injections as well to lower my HbA1c.
I first discovered LCHF lifestyle by reading a book by Drs Stephen Phinney and Jeff Volek, “The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance”. I also read other books and listened to numerous presentations on this topic. After a few months, I decided to stop all my medications and adopt a ketogenic lifestyle.
My HbA1c quickly dropped to normal values within 3 months. I had taken up outdoor cycling and my goal was to ride in long distance events. But I was concerned with the type of fuel needed for these events, while still being in Ketosis.
